Preventing Workplace Bullying: An Evidence-Based Guide for Leaders
Workplace bullying is a serious organisational problem which has profound impacts on individuals, teams, and organisations. Over the past 30 years, researchers have developed a robust understanding of bullying, including what causes it, what it looks like in workplaces, and most importantly, how to prevent it.
This short course distils this research into an accessible format that challenges status quo ways of thinking about and dealing with workplace bullying, and that highlights clear practical implications and ‘must-knows’ for leaders and managers.
Preventing Workplace Bullying program is available free to the mining industry thanks to State Government funding.

Who is this course for?
This course has been designed for people who work in the following roles or positions:
- Middle to senior management and leadership
- Work health and safety
- Human Resources or People and Capability
- Any other role that impacts or influences the design, organisation, or management of work, such as organisational development, ESG, wellbeing, or organisational change.
Although the content is tailored to the mining industry, the course material is relevant and meaningful for people from any organisation.
Course road map
The course is divided into four modules, and it is expected to take approximately six hours to complete in total.
Module 1. Understanding workplace bullying.
Module 2. Organisational approaches to preventing workplace bullying.
Module 3. The role of the leader in promoting a bullying-free workplace.
Module 4. A practical toolkit for the prevention of workplace bullying.
What is the format of this course?
This is a fully online, self-paced course available through ECU’s Executive Education platform. It is designed to be accessible and convenient – you can log in and complete the course in your own time, anytime. There is no face-to-face content, assignments, lectures, or tutorials, so you can work through the course material at your own pace.
About the MARS Centre
The Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Centre is an ECU industry collaboration centre for the mining sector. Through a focus on educating the current and incoming workforce, training future leaders, and driving research, MARS aims to:
- Create mentally healthy workplaces
- Build a culture of safety and respect
- Prepare for workplace safety in future mining
The multidisciplinary MARS Centre is based in ECU’s School of Business and Law. It involves inter-School collaboration with the School of Medical and Health Sciences and is funded through the WA Government’s MARS Program.
A key focus of the MARS Centre is on enhancing respect at work and improving mental health and wellbeing, this includes workplace bullying prevention.
